The best cafes in Auckland to work from as a freelancer

One of the great things about being a freelancer is that the world is your office. If you don’t feel like working from home, all you need is your laptop and a good wifi connection and you can pretty much set up anywhere to get your job done.

If you’re someone who likes to have ambient chatter and people around you, cafes are a great place to spend a couple of productive hours – but which ones are best? To find out, we went straight to the experts and asked the members of the She Owns It business network. Here’s what they said.

Some great cafés to work from in Auckland

Tongue and Groove
55 Birkenhead Avenue, Birkenhead

Conveniently located in the middle of Birkenhead’s main thoroughfare, Tongue and Groove is a warm and inviting space that has great coffee, large but reasonably-priced meals, and powerpoints and free wifi for your laptop. There’s plenty of parking just across the road in the Highbury Shopping Centre.

Columbus Coffee
Sylvia Park, 286 Mt Wellington Highway

The main drawcard of Columbus Coffee in Sylvia Park is the free childcare provided by the shopping centre’s Treehouse Creche (make sure you book by phone first). Enjoy up to two hours’ uninterrupted productivity along with free wifi, and a 25% discount on any hot drink if you’re a member of the free Sylvia Park Kiwibubs club. It’s nice and close to Car Park 5, which has parents’ car parks near the entrance.

Café Massimo
Shop 11B, 23-27 Nuffield Street, Newmarket

Tucked in amongst Newmarket’s designer shops, Café Massimo has a light, airy European vibe and coffee that’s roasted on-site. It also has a lovely fire for cold winter days. Take advantage of the free wifi while you enjoy their extensive all-day breakfast and lunch menu.

The Grounds
8/14 Henderson Valley Road

Occupying a quirky location at Whoa! Studios in Henderson, The Grounds is open from Wednesday to Sunday, but avoid the weekends because it’s extra busy! During the week it’s extremely popular with freelance workers, and looking at the menu, it’s not hard to see why. They do have free wifi – ask the staff when you arrive.

The Culpeper
Shed 22 Princes Wharf, Auckland Viaduct

When you want to get some work done in the heart of the city, The Culpeper has one of the best outlooks in town. Soak in the waterfront atmosphere and sample some of Auckland’s best seafood while you hook up to the free wifi and smash through your to-do list. Parking is within easy walking distance at the Downtown car park.

Little Creatures

The Botanist
Shed 13, City Works Depot, 90 Wellesley Street, Auckland

Situated in Auckland’s City Works Depot, this café is a funky mix of warm wood, industrial concrete and leafy greenery. It has some nice, high tables for if you prefer to stand while you work, and free wifi.

Eden Espresso, 98 Mt.Eden road. They make pretty decent coffee and lots of snacks/food options with very reasonable price. Also they are open very early in the mornings.

Thanks for the recommendation Zaf. Good to know they open early, that’s great. We will check it out next time we are in the area.

Chapter books and tea in mt Eden Village is also a cosy one to work or write in, owner said to me many people come to sit and work and write there.

Circus Circus Mt Eden has an awesome buzz and endless tables and is a fun quirky cafe to tuck yourself away in and work and write. I’ve sat there for hours at a time writing and they don’t mind at all. Super service.
